If an EPFO Member ID appears under the wrong Universal Account Number (UAN), start by identifying the exact record and the reason it is linked incorrectly. EPFO's April 2026 circular provides a process for Member IDs erroneously linked without the member's knowledge, including cases where contributions have already been received. It does not establish delinking as the general remedy for every inaccurate employment date or service record, a general appeal route, or a guarantee that a rejected request can be filed again. A rejection is also not, by itself, proof that the employment record is correct.
Before taking another step, save the Member ID, UAN, employer name, service dates, contribution history, any claim or transfer status, and the exact portal response. Do not send your UAN password, Aadhaar number, OTP, bank information, or full account identifiers in a public post or to an unverified helper.
First confirm which record is wrong
Open the official EPFO Member e-Sewa portal directly and compare the service history with your employment records. Write down the employer name, joining and exit dates, Member ID, contribution months, and whether any claim or online transfer is pending or completed. If you have multiple UANs or jobs, keep a separate row for each employment period rather than treating all entries as one account.
| Evidence | What it helps establish | What it does not decide alone |
|---|---|---|
| Service history and Member ID | Which employment record is associated with the UAN | Whether the association was legally or technically erroneous |
| Payslips, appointment or exit records | Whether the dates and employer details match your records | Whether EPFO will accept a delinking request |
| Contribution history | How many contributions the portal or records show | Whether every contribution was correctly reported |
| Claim or transfer status | Whether a claim or transfer may affect portal eligibility | Whether an exception or correction is available |
| Portal message or written order | The stated reason for a rejection or validation block | Whether the reason is complete or can be challenged |
A public forum post may describe a “wrong link,” but it cannot verify the underlying records. Keep the post separate from your own evidence. If the employer's name or dates appear unfamiliar, first ask the employer or EPFO for the record used to create the Member ID. Avoid submitting another request with guessed dates or selecting a reason that does not fit the facts.
What EPFO's April 2026 circular says
EPFO's Circular No. WSU/ErroneousLinkingofUAN/E-838432/2026-27/12, dated April 13, 2026, extends the erroneous Member ID delinking facility to records where contributions have been received. The route begins with the member initiating the request through the Member Portal, after which it is sent to the employer.
The circular distinguishes cases by contribution count and employer response:
| Record or response described in the circular | Published route |
|---|---|
| Contributions received no more than two times | Employer may process the delinking request |
| Employer refuses, or does not act within two weeks | Request is escalated to the Regional Office |
| Three to six contributions received | Request is sent to the Regional Office for examination |
| Claim processed, settled or pending, or more than six contributions | Circular says the member cannot file the delinking request for that Member ID |
For the Regional Office route, the circular describes examination by the Dealing Hand (Compliance), then the Section Supervisor (Compliance), followed by the Regional Provident Fund Commissioner (Compliance). The designated officer records reasons for approval or rejection on merit. This is the process the circular publishes; it is not a prediction about how a particular office will decide a particular record.
The portal manual enclosed with the circular describes additional system checks, including certain older joining dates and settled or pending online transfers. Treat those as portal validations described in the manual, not as extra conditions stated in the short circular letter. The portal's current response and the version of the instructions used for your request matter.
If the request is rejected or blocked
Read the reason in the portal or written communication and keep a copy with its date. The public material reviewed for this guide does not establish a general right to reapply, a fixed appeal period, or a separate appellate authority for every rejection. It also does not establish that one rejection permanently prevents a new request. Do not rely on a forum comment or a quoted internal note as an official rule unless EPFO provides the actual current order or circular.
Use a short written request to ask the employer or the responsible EPFO office to identify: the exact Member ID considered; the contribution count and months used; whether a claim or transfer status blocked the request; the rule or portal validation applied; and what correction or review route is currently available for that record. Ask for the applicable circular or written decision if the response refers to an internal instruction. Keep the acknowledgement and all replies.
A forum user recently described a rejection citing “RPFC II Note Orders dated 30 October 2026.” That post is an unverified account. The note itself, its author, scope, and legal effect were not available in the official sources reviewed here. Do not assume it changed the April circular or applies to another member's request.
Understand the balance warning before you proceed
The April circular's enclosed manual warns that successful delinking forfeits available funds and says the Member ID cannot later be linked again to the same UAN. The circular separately states that instructions would follow about transfer of delinked balances to the Settlement Reserve Fund. The two documents do not clearly reconcile the warning with the later transfer instruction. This guide therefore does not conclude that a particular balance is recoverable, transferred, or permanently lost.
Before confirming a request, save the exact warning shown in the portal and ask EPFO in writing how it applies to the Member ID and balance at issue. Do not proceed on the assumption that delinking is reversible or that a fund transfer will occur automatically. If the amount is material, obtain qualified advice before accepting an irreversible portal action.
Keep a decision file
Make a small, dated record set. It should contain the portal page or response, relevant service-history fields, contribution count, claim and transfer status, proof of the employer name and service dates, your request, and the employer or EPFO reply. Keep originals unchanged; create redacted copies before sharing. Redact UANs, Aadhaar, bank details, phone numbers, OTPs, and other identifiers unless an official channel specifically requires them.
If you need to correct a date or employer detail, ask which source document EPFO needs and how it should be submitted. If the employer no longer exists or does not respond, record that fact and ask the Regional Office which process applies. The 2026 circular provides an escalation route for specified contribution counts and employer inaction, but it does not answer every scenario, including every legacy record or completed transfer.
Use EPFO's current Member Portal and official contact channels. Keep the grievance or request number, date submitted, and any response deadline shown in the official communication. A portal acknowledgement confirms submission, not approval. A public report that someone succeeded after a particular escalation is not evidence that the same route, timing, or result applies to you.
How this differs from a missing PF contribution
A missing monthly contribution and an erroneous Member ID linked to a UAN are different record problems. If the Member ID is right but a wage month is missing, compare the payslip, passbook, payroll remittance and any exempted trust statement. See the India guide to an employer PF entry missing from the passbook. If an employer's identity or service record is unfamiliar, preserve the relevant employment documents before asking for a correction.
For other employment records, the India maternity benefit payment guide explains a separate evidence and escalation workflow. If an unrelated account is frozen, the India frozen bank account guide covers that distinct issue. Teams handling records across matters can use Gotham workflows to organize documents, owners and follow-up; the guide does not claim that software can decide EPFO eligibility or replace an official decision.
Before you submit or follow up
- Confirm the Member ID, UAN, employer, service dates and contribution months from official records.
- Check whether a claim, settlement or online transfer is pending or complete.
- Read the exact current portal warning and preserve the rejection reason or validation code.
- Compare the facts to EPFO's April 2026 circular, including the contribution-count and employer-response categories.
- Ask for the applicable written instruction when a response cites an internal note you have not seen.
- Clarify the balance warning and any proposed transfer before accepting delinking.
- Keep a dated, redacted evidence file and seek qualified advice if the amount or consequences are significant.

Questions
Can I submit another EPFO delinking request after a rejection?
The EPFO circulars reviewed here describe how an initial request is handled, but do not state a general right to reapply after rejection or a permanent bar after one rejection. Obtain the written reason and ask the responsible EPFO office which current process applies to that record.
When does an employer handle an erroneous Member ID delinking request?
Under EPFO's April 2026 circular, an employer may delink a Member ID where contributions were received no more than twice. A refusal or no action for two weeks, or a record with three to six contributions, is routed to the Regional Office for a reasoned decision by the designated officials.
Can every Member ID with contributions be delinked?
No. The April 2026 circular excludes Member IDs with a claim processed, settled or pending, and records with more than six contributions. The portal manual also describes certain record and transfer-status validations. Check the current portal result and the circular for the exact process.
Does approval mean the balance is paid back or can be moved to another UAN?
Do not assume either result. The enclosed portal manual warns that delinking forfeits available funds and cannot be reversed by relinking the ID, while the circular says further instructions would cover transfer of delinked balances to the Settlement Reserve Fund. The reviewed documents do not reconcile those statements. Ask EPFO for written clarification before proceeding.
Does an EPFO rejection prove that the Member ID belongs to me?
A rejection is an administrative outcome, not by itself proof of the underlying employment or identity facts. Read the stated reason, compare the service and contribution records, and request correction or clarification through the current official process.
General information about EPFO's published erroneous Member ID delinking process, not legal advice. The applicable route depends on the member record, contribution and claim history, employer response, current portal validation, and the reason stated in an official decision. The alleged October 30, 2026 note order described in one public post was not verified. Confirm current instructions with EPFO and seek qualified Indian social-security advice before relying on a conclusion.
