A cancelled flight and a passenger choosing to cancel are different situations. The answer can also depend on which airline operates the flight, when you were told, where you booked, how you paid, the fare terms and the rules in force on the relevant date.

Start by saving the ticket and PNR, payment receipt, cancellation message, fare conditions and all correspondence with the airline or booking agent. Ask for the operating carrier in writing if it is unclear from the booking.

If the airline cancels your flight

For flight disruption, read the DGCA's Civil Aviation Requirements on denied boarding, cancellations and delays (Revision 4, effective 15 February 2023). The CAR covers the operating airline and expressly refers to foreign carriers operating to or from India.

The notice period matters. Under paragraph 3.3, the CAR calls for an acceptable alternate flight or refund when notice is given at least two weeks before departure, and also for notice given less than two weeks but up to 24 hours before departure. When the cancellation does not meet those notice provisions, paragraph 3.3.2 addresses an alternate flight or compensation in addition to a full ticket refund. It also addresses a missed connection booked on the same ticket number. Both remedies depend on the paragraph's conditions. The CAR also contains exceptions: for example, extraordinary circumstances can affect compensation, and the passenger's contact details can matter. Do not treat every cancellation as an automatic compensation claim.

What to checkWhy it matters
Operating airline and ticketThe CAR places the relevant obligation on the operating airline. A marketing carrier named on the ticket may differ.
Time and method of noticeThe cancellation CAR sets out options by notice period. Keep the message and its timestamp.
What the airline offeredSave the alternate-flight option, refund option and any reason it gave for the cancellation.
Your booking recordKeep the PNR, receipt, fare conditions, payment method and agent details.

The disruption CAR points to a separate DGCA instrument for how refunds are processed: the CAR on refund of airline tickets, Revision 3, dated 24 February 2026 and effective 26 March 2026. It sets out processing requirements for different payment and booking channels. For a credit-card purchase, the Ministry's 23 March 2026 answer to Parliament says airlines must process the refund within seven days of cancellation and credit the original card. The answer describes the refund CAR as applicable to Indian carriers; check the current CAR and the country-of-origin rules when the operating airline is foreign. Ask the airline or agent to confirm when it recorded the cancellation, when it processed the refund, the amount calculated, the payment route and when payment was sent. A later bank posting can be a separate step.

If you decide to cancel

Check the fare conditions and the current refund CAR before cancelling. The 2026 CAR describes a 48-hour look-in option for eligible tickets booked directly on an airline website, with conditions that include a minimum interval between booking and travel. It is not a universal no-fee cancellation right for every portal booking or every ticket. Read the current text and ask the airline to explain how the conditions apply to your booking.

The CAR also addresses refunds of specified statutory taxes and applicable charges in some cancellation, non-utilisation and no-show situations. The items and conditions matter. Request an itemised calculation rather than assuming that every amount is refundable or that a non-refundable base fare means every other component is forfeited.

Foreign-carrier tickets need an extra check

The refund CAR's paragraph 2 includes language about foreign carriers operating to or from India. Paragraph 3(k) says refunds for foreign carriers are as per the regulations of the carrier's country of origin and refers to the refund modes in paragraphs 3(a) to (c). The Ministry of Civil Aviation, in a Rajya Sabha answer dated 23 March 2026, says the refund CAR is applicable to Indian carriers and that primary refund regulations for international carriers are governed by the carrier's country of origin.

Read those statements together. They do not support assuming that every Indian refund entitlement or processing period controls a foreign carrier. The exact application of the CAR's scope and mode provisions to a particular ticket can depend on the carrier and facts. Ask the operating airline for its written basis, check the country-of-origin rules and seek qualified advice if the response is disputed. The separate disruption CAR expressly includes foreign carriers to or from India, but the remedy still depends on its provisions and the circumstances.

Raise and track a grievance

Write to the airline first and, if you booked through an agent or travel portal, include that company where relevant. Ask for the rule or fare condition relied on, an itemised refund calculation, the payment route, the expected processing date and a complaint reference. Keep the response and proof of when you sent the request.

The Ministry's AirSewa information page says passengers can raise flight cancellation and refund grievances through the portal or mobile application and track responses with a grievance reference number. The AirSewa portal currently requires a login or sign-up to report or track a grievance. Check its current instructions before submitting. A grievance channel helps route and track a complaint; it does not itself decide that a refund or compensation is owed.

If an airline cancels my flight, do I get a refund?

The DGCA disruption CAR provides different options based on when the airline gives notice.
